Scentwork is when a dog uses its superior sense of smell to identify and locate a scent which it has been trained to detect.
Using the sense of smell is a natural behaviour for a dog and essential in hunting and finding prey. This behaviour has been put to many uses, for example in police work, search and rescue, and hunting. As a dog sport, Scentwork mimics detection style nosework as practiced by customs and excise, explosives detection, search and rescue and medical detection dogs.
As a training activity, scentwork is fun, rewarding and at the same time mentally tiring for your dog. It will improve the relationship between you and your dog and it is a good confidence builder especially for the shy or worried dog.
You can participate whether it is just for fun, or go on and enter trials. We train to Scentwork UK specifications with the intention that if you wish to enter Scentwork trials you will be well prepared. Scentwork UK promotes and develops scentwork both as a training activity and as a dog sport with regular trials nationally. The scent we train the dog to recognise at level 1-2 is Cloves, for levels 3-5 we train the dogs to recognise both Cloves and Gun Oil.
Scentwork training is open to anyone, it is suitable for all breeds and ages, puppies and dogs with injuries or disabilities – scentworkis a non-impact, non-injurious sport.
I look forward to welcoming you and your dog to one of our Scentwork courses running throughout the year.
